Music Every Night
The origin of the name The Spice of Life is a reference to a line in by Willam Cowper ‘variety’s the very spice of life / that gave it all it’s flavour'.
There has been a tavern on this site since the mid 18th century although the present listed building was built in 1898. During its history "The Spice of Life" has had several names including; The Cantons, The Scots House and The George.
This is very apt for 'The Spice of Life' because variety is what you will find. There is a wide variety of food available for all tastes and appetites from light snacks to hearty meals. There is an extensive range of drinks with a comprehensive wine list and of course McMullens own beers - real ale. When it comes to entertainment then musical variety is the name of the day. Every night is different. There are jam sessions, where all you need to bring is your instrument if you want to join in, (Drums, amps and keyboards are provided) It's a place for lively Jazz sessions, as well as what everyone really loves but pretends to hate with a free Karaoke night on Sundays.
The Spice of Life has a sound musical heritage having hosted such favorites as Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and top jazz acts such as Jamie Cullum, Soweto Kinch and Jim Mullen.
All in all The Spice of Life lives up to its reputation and always provides good food, excellent beers, great service and some of the best live music around, The Spice of Life remains one of the best nights out in London.
